{"id":4739,"date":"2021-12-05T16:06:41","date_gmt":"2021-12-05T21:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wmfc.ca\/?p=4739"},"modified":"2022-02-02T16:53:55","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T21:53:55","slug":"un-reportage-sur-le-risque-de-covid-19-pour-les-immunocompromis-verifie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wmfc.ca\/fr\/2021\/12\/05\/a-report-on-the-risk-of-covid-19-to-the-immunocompromised-lets-check\/","title":{"rendered":"Un rapport sur le risque de la Covid-19 pour les immunod\u00e9prim\u00e9s : Regardons cela de plus pr\u00e8s !"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent report on the CTV web site \u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/breakthrough-covid-19-infections-more-severe-likely-in-immunocompromised-individuals-pfizer-study-1.5687155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/breakthrough-covid-19-infections-more-severe-likely-in-immunocompromised-individuals-pfizer-study-1.5687155<\/a>) discussed the results of a peer-reviewed medical paper.\u00a0 The paper was a retrospective study of the effects of Covid-19 on a population of 1.2 million people fully-vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The CTV report included the following two paragraphs.\u00a0 The second of them, especially, can be construed as alarming [your editor\u2019s clarifications added in square brackets]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Of the cohort [of 1.2 million fully-vaccinated people], 17.7 per cent were identified as immunocompromised. Some of the immunocompromising conditions in the cohort included solid tumours, kidney disease, inflammatory diseases, organ transplants and HIV\/AIDS [and hematologic malignancies].<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">However, immunocompromised participants accounted for 38.2 per cent of all breakthrough infections, 59.7 per cent of all hospitalizations and 100 per cent of all deaths.<\/p>\n<p>But wait a minute \u2026 that sounds really drastic.\u00a0 Almost 60% of all hospitalizations, and 100% of all deaths??\u00a0\u00a0 Sure, with WM, many of us are immunocompromised.\u00a0 But are the risks <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>that<\/strong><\/span> bad?<\/p>\n<p>Is there more to this?<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the CTV report referenced the journal paper from which the reporter drew their conclusions.\u00a0 It is at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13696998.2021.2002063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13696998.2021.2002063<\/a>.\u00a0 After a quick read, we find that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The researchers identified 1,277,747 million fully-vaccinated people in the US.\u00a0 (I\u2019ll call that 1.2 million.)<\/li>\n<li>Of those 1.2 million, there were <strong>only<\/strong> 978 \u201cbreakthrough\u201d Covid-19 cases.\u00a0 And only 2 deaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, first of all, the vaccine <strong>works<\/strong>, and works really well.\u00a0 Only 2 deaths out of 1.2 million fully-vaccinated people!<\/p>\n<p>Now, looking more closely at just the immunocompromised in the study:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of the 1.2 million, the researchers identified 225,796 as immunocompromised.\u00a0 (We\u2019ll call that 225K.)<\/li>\n<li>374 of the breakthrough Covid-19 cases were in this immunocompromised population.\u00a0 So that means this population of 225K had about 38% of the Covid-19 cases.<\/li>\n<li>But it also means that only 0.17% (yes, that is <strong>much<\/strong> less than 1%) of the 225K immunocompromised caught Covid-19 at all.\u00a0 So 99.83% of the immunocompromised did <strong>not<\/strong> catch Covid-19.\u00a0 Once again, vaccines work!<\/li>\n<li>And of these 374 Covid-19 cases in the immunocompromised, yes, there were 2 deaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So the risk of death from Covid-19 among these <strong>vaccinated<\/strong> but <strong>immunocompromised<\/strong> people was, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>assuming they caught Covid-19 in the first place<\/strong><\/span>, about 0.5%.\u00a0 This is much less than the 1-3% of deaths among the <strong>un-<\/strong>vaccinated population.<\/p>\n<p>So \u2026 the bottom line for us who are immunocompromised WMers is: \u00a0Caution is advised.\u00a0 Not despair or panic.\u00a0 \u201cGet vaccinated, act unvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent report on the CTV web site \u00a0(https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/breakthrough-covid-19-infections-more-severe-likely-in-immunocompromised-individuals-pfizer-study-1.5687155) discussed the results of a peer-reviewed medical paper.\u00a0 The paper was a retrospective study of the effects of Covid-19 on a population of 1.2 million people fully-vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine in the US.
